Ken is a middle-aged fisherman who has captained the Sea Mac for more years than he can count. He has experienced heavy weather, rough seas and even death. However, nothing has prepared him for what he is about to endure on the island of Eilean Boghdoiri. His friend Paul, also the island’s lighthouse keeper, has gone missing. Ken and his deckhand Jimmie set out in search of him, only to discover things are far more complicated than initially thought. As they race to unlock the mystery, Ken and Jimmie find themselves fighting to stay alive. Will Paul ever be found, and, if so, can they make it off the island in time?

I recently reviewed a previous short story from this author and was interested to see if he'd progressed as a writer. I'm happy to say yes!

This story is tighter with his dialogue, although there is work needed to be done, if I'm being honest. The two characters are unique and I could tell them apart, although I think there is still too much 'stating the facts' about their lives instead of showing the reader. Case in point: one character has friendship bracelets from his kids. Instead of the other guy asking him simply 'are those from your kids?' he could be fidgeting with them when nervous and worried about his girls, then slipping them in instead of a simple info dump. Obviously just my opinion.

As for the story itself... after reading two stories from the author I am getting a very old school "Twilight Zone" vibe to his writing, and I like that. So many writers today are relying on the shock, profanity and blood and guts to tell a story, and whenever I find something like this as a reader i enjoy it. He also keeps it wide open, allowing the reader to fill in the gaps with your own imagination, which doesn't always work. But in the case of this story it did.

Earthly Forces eBook Kevin Hopson Reviews

Earthly Forces is a tale about two fishermen going to an island to discover what happened to their friend and why he is not answering their calls. Things are strange, with transmissions coming across when they shouldn't be to all the clocks stopping at once.

Another reviewer stated this sounded like a Twilight Zone piece and I have to agree. Ken has a way of writing that leaves the reader looking over their shoulder for Rob Serling. Very nice style of writing, very clear and concise. And very enjoyable. Nice work Ken.
This type of story can polarize readers' opinions; some readers like a story that leaves room for the readers' imaginations to fill in the gaps, and some readers get frustrated if all the loose ends are not gathered up by the end. If, like me, you're one of the former, then you'll probably enjoy this story. About the only mystery that I did not appreciate was the identity of "Mark" (you'll have to read to the very last word in this story to see what I'm talking about).
Leaning heavily on tropes such as in the TV show "Lost", Hopkins does a good job of gradually increasing the tension and the sense of menace. Not knowing the how or the why of what happened on the island contributes to that sense of menace.

Review of Earthly Forces by Kevin Hopson
A Short Story

This story is a joy and a delight, very well written, especially knowing that author Hopson is relatively new to fiction. A superb reader's hook, descriptive imagery, and intricately but subtly woven backstory keep readers turning pages in suspense and yes, in sheer delight. I've caught myself pausing, backing up, and saying, "whoa! Incredible!" more than once as I sped through this highly suspenseful story. Let me reiterate that "highly suspenseful" is exactly what I mean. Mr. Hopson has a very vivid and creative imagination-and he knows how to express his imagination for the reader to revel in too. I anticipate reading more by Kevin Hopson. Congratulations to Muse It Up Publishing for bringing us his work.
A very eerie read...A lighthouse, a keeper's cottage, beautiful landscape...and death. Where is the source of the haunting that leads to death?

Well paced in a spine tingly sort of way...but oh does it leave you guessing.

I'm not sure how I feel about guessing, but I cannot deny the powerful impact and longevity such an ending creates. LONNNGGGG after finishing this short story, I find myself oddly reflecting back upon it...wondering anew...haunted yet again.

The sign of a truly good story for me, is one that stays with you, spinning around, demanding you chew upon it again and again, hours, days, weeks after you have finished reading its finalé.

This book, EARTHLY FORCES by Kevin Hopson, does that and more. Therefore I give it five twitchy stars. In other words, I HIGHLY recommend Kevin Hopson's EARTHLY FORCES.
This short story tells the tale of two men who go and see what has happened to their friend on an island. Upon arriving on the island weird events to happen such as the men hearing their own voice come across the radio sometime after the message was sent.

The story's setting is well written and adds and air of mystery to the story. Kevin's story involving the two friends is believable in the way there are written. This allows the reader to relate to the men and understand their concern for their missing friend.

The short story is one that grabbed my attention and had me read through it from start to end in the same siting. There was no way I wanted to put the story down till I completed. The only real draw back to the story is how you are left wondering what exactly was happening on the island. You may be able to estimate from your own interpretations but would have liked to see a bit more when it came to the cause of the problems.

Overall with the elements involved from the story and it's setting this is easily worth a read. The ending does a good job of tying up the story, even with the omission of what was truly going on. It's enough to capture the imagination and hope for those involved to overcome what is happening. It's a story I enjoyed reading.
This story starts off with something not being right and just gets better from there. This is a well written story with just enough detail to let you get to know the characters enough to care about them.
Ken and Jimmie just want to make sure their friend is okay so ashore they go. What they find and what happens next is much more than they expect.

This is a must read story!!! I loved every word.
